Transportation in Hong Kong is
inexpensive and efficient and does not involve having to bargain for a price. The
different means of transportation in Hong Kong are Taxi's , Trains ( KCR & MTR)
Ferries, Trams, Peak Tram, Buses,Rickshaw riding
Taxi's: Taxi's are red and white on Hong Kong & Kowloon side. The
taxi's in Hong Kong tend to keep the flag system in day to show that we can hire them and
during night time 'taxi' sign on the roof is lit up. Taxi's cannot be picked up on a solid
yellow line on the road. The fare is fixed with a flag fall of $14 and the drivers expect
a tip, but just to round the fare up to the nearest dollar. Taxi's are restricted from
picking up and sitting down passengers in some areas, such as along roads with single or
double yellow lines, so don't blame the taxi driver id he doesn't stop exactly where you
want. There are more than 20,000 licensed taxi's. The standard of English spoken or
understood by drivers varies. There is the same rule in New Territories & Lantau
Island but it has taxi's of green & white colors but they only travel in the same area
this taxi drivers wouldn't come to Hong Kong Island side to drop you.
Trains: There are two railway systems one is MTR (mass transit
railway) and KCR (Kowloon canton railway) MTR is underground fast, efficient,
air-conditioned, cheap and convient for visitors to use. It covers three lines
Kwloon, Hong Kong Island, and New Territories. It runs from morning 6:00 a.m
to 1:00 a.m. It is mainly used by local commuters and around million passengers
a day are packed in so its not a good idea to travel at rush hour.
It also helps to connect to the
KCR at Kowloon tong station fares ranges from $4 to $13.50. The ticket system
is electronic and easy to operate, there are ticket machines which takes HK
$1, HK$2, HK $5, HK $10,HK 50¢ coins and HK $20 note. For bigger bill's you
could get the change from ticket office or mini- Hang Seng Banks which are all
MTR's. Do not bend or dirty the ticket as this interferes with the magnetized
strip on the back. KCR's are basically used to travel in New Territories and
to cross borders of Hong Kong and China, U.S.S.R and on to Europe.
Ferries: The green and white ferries have been zipping to and fro
from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui since 1898 till today and it still cost's only HK $1.20 for
upper deck and HK $1 fore lower deck. There is also a service to Hung Hom and this ferries
shuttles from Central to Hung Hom, Central to Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsim Sha Tsui to Wan Chai.
There are most ferries to major island depart from outlying district services pier in
Central on Hong Kong Island side. A good idea would be to buy a return ticket to save
time. The journey takes about an hour each way and are inexpensive. Many of the top decks
have air-conditioning but on a pleasant day nothing would be as good as standing outside
on the back deck.
Trams & Peak Tram: The tram system in Hong Kong Island
side is considered as a ' pollution solution' The trams run only in Hong Kong
Island side from Kennedy town near Wan Chai to the east of Hong Kong to Shau
Kei Wan. This
tram services are too cheap the maximum the fare will go up to HK $2. For a
romantic reminder of bygone era, look out for the antique tram, complete wit
front and rear balconies and brass fittings. Peak Tram service is a must on
Hong Kong Island side, it takes you up to the height of 397 meters to the Peak
tower and it also gives you a spectacular view of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon
and the islands of the South China Sea.
Buses: Hong Kong's buses are run by China Motor bus and they are
cream and blue and citybus are in Orange in Hong Kong Island side. Kowloon motor bus are
cream & red color in Kowloon side. The price ranges from $5 to $30. There are no
ticket collectors. You pay the exact fare into a box as you enter, so have a collection of
small change handy. Minibuses are also found in Hong Kong which is the best way of getting
around town they are red & yellow minivans which carry only 16 people.
Rickshaw Riding: Rickshaw riding, now seen only around star
ferry piers in Central district, they take you around the buildings and where ever you
want to pose to take photo you could ask driver to stop but before hiring the rickshaw
negotiate the price first. |
