Lantau Island is one of the biggest
Islands of all Islands in Hong Kong matter fact it is even bigger than Hong Kong Island.
Lantau has a very eye-catching mountain secenery, the highest mountain is Lantau peak which
is 934 metres and the extraordinary thing about this Island is the rocky coastlime with
appealing white sandy beaches. The tourist attraction on this Island is the Po Lin
Monastery and Big Buddha.
Po Lin Monastery is located at 450
metres altitude Ngong Ping Plateau, It is not a historical place because it was opened in
1970. The main hall has two floors and it is covered with an elaborately decorated roof
and has three big, golden Buddha statues. The main attraction of Po Lin is the 34m
high Buddha statue outside, It is said to be the biggest Buddha statue in Asia
because it's height is 34m tall and it weighs 250 tons but to see the close-up of it you
need to climb a lot of stairs to reach the top but it is worth the effort you get to enjoy
a wonderful view of Lantau and also the other little island's that surrounds it and also
the blue south China sea and the mountains covered with green trees.
Also on the same Island is the tea
plantation been produced and it is the only one in the whole territory, you can try this
products in the related garden's. Now if you are hungry you could try a little lunch, the
monks of Po Lin Monastery offer, it is a totally vegetarian restaurant that serves
excellent food at very moderate prices.
The best way to reach here
will be to take a ferry from Central to Mui Wo and from there take a bus to
Po Lin. When you come back from Po Lin monastery to Mui Wo and you are
still not tired and would like to explore Mui Wo than good thing would be to
just walk through Chung Hau street to Man Mo temple, the waterfall, the sliver
mine beach outside this little town. If you want to explore the green mountains
you could exit from the bus before couple of stops and walk down to the ferry
pier to catch your ferry back to Hong Kong- Island or other leading island's.
Over all Lantau is a exciting place to visit and an ideal place for hiking in
the woods. |
