| 1841 | January26 Captain Charles elliot plants the British flag at possession point on Hong Kong Island. |
| 1860 | March26, The tip of Kowloon Peninsula and stonecutters Island are ceded to Britain |
| 1888 | The funicular railway up to the Peak is completed, cutting the journey from three hours to eight minutes. |
| 1898 | July 1, Under the second Treaty of Peking, the 588-square-kilometeres are known as New territories is leased to Britain for 99 years. |
| 1910 | The Kowloon railway to the border with China is completed. |
| 1911 | The overthrow of the Manchu Empire in China is sends a flood of refugees into Hong Kong |
| 1938 | Some 500.000 refugees from China flee to Hong Kong. |
| 1941 | December 8, The Japanese invade Hong Kong from Guanhzhou. The British surrender on Christmas Day. |
| 1946 | Governor Sir Mark Young resumes control after World War II. |
| 1950 | Mass influx of refugees following the fall of Shanghaito the Communists. Hong Kong textile industry grows from this immigration. |
| 1967 | A spin-off from cultural Revolution in China causes riots in Hong Kong. |
| 1971 | Typhoons rose brings 288millimeters of rain in one day and 105-knot winds. |
| 1972 | The cross- Harbour tunnel opens. |
| 1978 | Vietnamese refugees atart arriving at the rate of 600 a day. |
| 1979 | The Mass transit Railways opens ( MTR ) |
| 1982 | Sino-British negotiations commence over the future of Hong Kong after June30, 1997, when the lease on the New Territories expires. |
| 1984 | December19, China and British sign an agreement on the future of Hong Kong after June30,1997 |
| 1989 | The Eastern Harbour crossing, Hong Kong's second harbour tunnel, opens along with the new MTR links connecting Quarry Bay with Lam Tin. |
| 1991 | Hong Kong Park, the Hong Kong Science musuem and the museum of art open. |
| 1997 | July1, Hong Kong handed over to China. British rule over ! |
| 1997 | Mr.Tung Chee Wah announced as the governor of Hong Kong |
