Always a favourite with the boys,
they are affectionately known as the 'Red Devils'. Their rivalry with
fellow northerners,Liverpool,is legendary. The most historic event of
the club sadly happened away from the pitch. The Munich air crash in 1958
claimed eight of Matt Busby's squad who were known as the 'Busby Babes'.
Using the skills of Bobby Charlton and Denis
Law, and nurturing the youthful skills of George Best, Busby built into
another inspirational team. In the mid-1960s, almost every Manchester
United player was world-class. It was only when Alex Ferguson took over
in 1986 that their 'star' players once again reached the standards of
United's past heroes. This season they became the first team in British
history to win a second domestic league and cup double.
And in the year 1999 Manchester United again
broke the record but this time in the whole of Europe as they are the
FIRST team to win the TREBLE (Premiere League Cup, F.A. Cup and the UEFA
Champions League). And it is the Only TEAM for wining Premiere League
Cup Three times in a row (1999/2000/2001). |
