During the close season the North Stand is pulled down and work begins to replace it with a three tier structure. Old Trafford capacity will rise to 56,000. The close season sees the shock departure of Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Andrei Kanchelskis. No major signings are made and the burden is now placed on United's kids to bring the Premier League trophy back to Old Trafford. United finish the season as Champions pipping Newcastle United for the League title, on the final day of the season. Six days later United return to Wembley to rectify last season's F. A. Cup final defeat. A late goal by player of the season Eric Cantona beats Liverpool 1-0 securing a historic 'double double' for United. In the UEFA Cup United are knocked out on the away goal ruling in the first round, by Rotor Volgograd. The League (Coca Cola) Cup brings a shock defeat in round two by York City.
